The Six Domains

Everything is connected.

I view all matters in life as interconnected. Once you understand that, you can start anywhere. Working on one area makes comprehensive progress.

God envelops the entire ecosystem and indwells each component. Within it are six domains. They identify the relatable and measurable components of your life, where the resources or constraints are. They are always feeding resources to, or drawing resources from, each other, whether you’re aware of it or not.

Domain 1 of 6

Mindset

The sum of your beliefs.

Mindset is the sum of your beliefs. It works as a resource, a monitor, and a tool, and most of the time you don’t see it directly. You see what it produces.

Mindset is one of the three stress generators, along with environment and lifestyle. It is also one of the three constructors. The same beliefs that keep you stuck can be reorganized to build you out.

Every obstacle you face is either a fact or a perception. New decisions have an opportunity to change facts. Perceptions need to change to the degree they’re inaccurate, or go away to the degree they’re not useful. Very often, one narrow fact produces a broad perception, and that link is the key to uncover.

So we get all of it out in the open first. These aren’t complaints or excuses. We lay out every obstacle so we can probe each one and come to a point where you understand what decisions will require what type of trade-off.

Then we ask a more useful question. If X, Y, and Z are qualities of a successful person, how do you go about the doing of X, Y, or Z?

If you’re like many intelligent, motivated, ambitious people, the answer is buried somewhere within your mind. My job is to help you see your answers, organize them, and prioritize them based on a more complete understanding of your values. And don’t wait to feel better before you start. The work itself is what heals.

Domain 2 of 6

Relationships

Support, meaning, and wisdom, given and received.

Relationships provide psychological and physical support. They bring meaning and purpose to life. They contribute to your wisdom and let you contribute to the wisdom and benefit of others.

Health and relationships sit next to each other, on top of the base of God. They are equal in weight to each other, and to God, as the primary foundation of stability and meaning in life.

Your spouse, your children, your parents, your co-workers, and your business partners are always feeding resources to you or drawing resources from you, whether you’re aware of it or not.

Life doesn’t operate in silos. You play roles at certain times, but all of you is operating at the same time. That’s why so many daily conflicts land here: how do I balance what my child needs, the financial demands of my family, and growing my business or career, so I can meet the needs of the people I love?

A strained relationship rarely stays where it started. It changes the environment you live and work in, the environment affects your health, and your health affects your finances.

Once you fully accept the autonomy of another, that their thoughts, emotions, and beliefs are fully theirs, you can do the same for yourself, and the stress, social anxiety, and fear of conflict go away. Letting another person be and think whatever they choose frees you to do and be what you are. When you can accept another, whether you agree or not, there is no conflict or fight, and listening and understanding can occur.

Domain 3 of 6

Health

Doing what God has called you to do, using your physical body.

Health is doing what God has called you to do, what you’re interested in, and what you’re capable of, using your physical body.

Stress is physiologic. Its physiologic consequences impact relationships, business, and money-making performance. Treating the stress is a band-aid. The stress generator needs to be identified and corrected, and it’s usually a mindset, environmental, and lifestyle synergy. Correcting the stress generators migrates you toward a corrective state, which solves many problems, because they’re all interlinked.

Sometimes health is the constraint. If your health prevents you from doing your work well, improving your health may be what unlocks the financial.

Sometimes health is the symptom. A home has mold, the mold drives the health problem, and the health problem drives the financial one.

Health, sleep, and diet are easier to hold when they’re necessary for progress toward the goal. That’s when they stop competing with everything else.

Part of the end state is being relatively free of stark trade-offs, like deciding between your health and making money. The goal is a better overall you, a whole system that works better, self-corrects and self-heals. Not a better number.

Domain 4 of 6

Finances

Being able to choose what to do, when, and how.

Financial independence means being able to choose what to do, when, and how you go about doing it.

It’s not all-or-nothing. There are different forms and combinations of financial independence short of being fully independently wealthy. More financial security unlocks specific things you can then do.

Finances are a good place to start, because they strongly influence every other area and the overall quality of life. They’re objective, so they’re an easy place to begin and work outward from.

Many capable people who work hard haven’t made progress because they’ve never looked at their finances across the continuum: where they’re at now, how old their family members are and what they’ll be responsible for, projected across 15 or 20 years, with different financial scenarios applied at each of those ages. When you start modeling it that way, you start seeing life from a different perspective.

From there, financial independence becomes a progression with real milestones. You don’t go from A to Z without passing through the letters in between, and you don’t become a millionaire without saving the first dollar. Milestones that build capability in a specific way help you progress professionally, change habits and lifestyle, and stay focused on a longer-range goal.

Move forward with what you have, not what you might have. You’ll see yourself getting more independent, one meaningful milestone at a time.

Financial independence isn’t the top of the pyramid. Liberty is: the complete freedom and capability to pursue outcomes that have meaning, contribution, and that satisfy your deeper, long-term goals.

Domain 5 of 6

Time

The only truly fixed resource.

Time is hard to define. It’s ever-present, and it’s the same resource for all of us. You cannot lose it. You cannot create it. You can’t make up for lost time… because it cannot be lost. Time simply is.

Most of us treat time like a benchmark for our other resources. We decide how successful we are by how much of everything else we’ve gathered against the only truly fixed resource we have. That can be helpful, but it’s probably flawed logic.

Time is involved in every other domain. Ask the right questions and you’ll “get more time” (sort of…).

In truth, this work is about creating a mental structure to start conceptualizing the years you have left. When you lay out where you are now, and where you and your family will be over the next 15 or 20 years, you start seeing life from a different perspective.

Doing significant things requires focus, energy, and resources. A lot of capable people don’t have those available, because they’re always available to solve other people’s problems. Always available, they become depleted. Depleted, they can’t build. Not building, they stay obligated.

When several parts of life are changing at once, each one can feel like a resource-demanding island, and you end up trading one off against another. It doesn’t have to work that way. When the pieces are arranged so they progress together, you move from a trade-off mentality to an abundance mentality.

Living intentionally toward the highest calling you’re capable of is a great idea. Whether anyone ever actually achieves that, probably no one can really know. But why not live today, and point the future, toward liberty?

Domain 6 of 6

Environment

Where you live your life.

Environment is where you live your life: your home, your work, recreation and the gym, your church or synagogue, your club, and the organizations you belong to.

Environment is one of the three stress generators, along with mindset and lifestyle. It is also one of the three constructors.

The state of a person’s physical space tracks with the clarity of their thinking and their ability to communicate in a focused, concise way. That makes environment a diagnostic: read the space to read the person, including yourself.

It also makes environment an intervention. You can organize or clear up your mental and cognitive stress by starting with your physical environment. Often the space was never the real problem. Working on it is how you get to the problem.

Sometimes the environment is the problem. A lot of the chronic illness we see today is tied to the indoor environment. Treating the health is a band-aid if you keep living in the house.

Change the environment and a lot of other things start to move.
